Why choose produce that’s in season?

It's better for your health

Produce that is grown and consumed in their appropriate season is more nutritionally dense. Harvesting produce at its peak tends to retain all of its nutrient and vitamin content. The most vibrant and flavorful fruits and vegetables are those that are in season. Adding a variety of fruits and vegetables gives your body a plethora of vital nutrients and vitamins that are needed for the season. Think about it this way, citrus and broccoli as well as other cruciferous vegetables in the winter provide vitamin C that helps provide a boost to your immune system.

It's cheaper

When there is an overabundance of produce during a particular season, the prices have a tendency to drop. Summer for example is berry season. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries are all at their peak and they are readily available at lower prices.

It reduces your carbon footprint

One of the most environmentally friendly things you can do is to reduce your carbon footprint and this includes buying local and in season produce. In supporting more geographically sustainable food choices, we are doing just that. While grocery shopping we rarely think about how far our food has traveled prior too landing on grocery store shelves. There is a heavy environmental impact that comes with produce grown from out of our area. A great way to eat within the seasons is to buy locally grown produce. This way, the produce doesn’t have to travel as far keeping fuel emissions and transportation costs low. As an added incentive, shopping local will help support your local farmers.
